La Selva Biological Station is owned and operated by the Organization
for Tropical Studies (OTS) a consortium of more than 50 U.S.
and Costa Rican institutes of higher learning. The studies
being carried out at La Selva represent the forefront of our
knowledge about tropical rain forest biology.
Over 400 bird species have been reported from La Selva and
include Crested owl, Rufous-vented ground cuckoo, sungrebe,
Chestnut-bellied heron, and Cinnamon woodpecker. The diverse,
lowland jungle is also home to many reptiles and mammals.
Accompanied by a station naturalist on site, rub shoulders
with field biologists while you explore this 30 year old jungle
reserve. Driving time from San José to La Selva is
approximately 90 minutes.
