Quetzals
and Paramo
Operated by Costa Rica Expeditions
Duration: 8 hours
Price per person: $99.00
Located 11,000 feet above sea level, in the vicinity of San
Isidro, Cerro de la Muerte is the highest point on the Pan-American
Highway and has an area of tropical alpine vegetation (paramo)
at the summit. You will have a chance to view several orchids,
especially high altitude miniatures. Turning over a rock or
two should reveal the Mountain salamander, which is abundant
at this altitude. Also, look for bird species such as the
Timberline wren, Volcano junco, Wrenthrush, Long-tailed silky
flycatcher and Flame-throated warbler, which are endemic to
these highlands.
The
high-altitude oak forest of Finca Chacón is a good
opportunity to see quetzals as well. This family-run farm
and ecolodge features home-cooked meals, fresh fruit and trout
fishing in high mountain streams. The driving time from San
José to Cerro de la Muerte is approximately 2 hours.
Includes:
Transportation, lunch, entrance to parks where applicable,
services of a Naturalist Guide. Minimum: 4 participants. Bring
your umbrella or other rain gear.
